Embark on working for 2 start ups

———-

I wrote with regard to the objectives for 4th term and the classes I opted. The companies for which I will work are decided. Both are start-up, one is in London and the other is in Barcelona. For former one, I will work with 4 students as a team and it’s project style. For latter one, I will join the company and work though I should define the goal, outputs, and scope of activities because of time limitation.

First of all, I have to find issues. This is so interesting. A company has a technology highly evaluated by VCs on the other hand it has no client yet. The other already released its web-service and took renewal last week; however, I cannot open the page due to error. They are probably struggling with trouble shooting.

I will work with CEO or Founder in both companies.

One of their expectations is to make a revenue stream. I want to focus on the tasks the company should do to make good result within limited time.

One thing for good communication|

One thing for good communication is to separate fact and other things derived from it and opt your reaction following the fact, not other things. You have to understand that the more you follow not the fact but the things derived from it within your mind the more the possibility of which you cause misunderstanding and get trouble becomes.

For example, in a case of Personality and Leadership, when a person got a feedback for his important report from an executive whose age is same with him after its submission and the feedback was so detail with red handwritten letters, he felt that the executive accused his report and inhibit him from promotion; then, he resented and tried to revenge on her (of course with smart way, not directly aggressive).

As you know, in this case, he didn’t follow the fact but the things, emotion and assumption, derived from the fact within his mind. The fact and derived things are

  • The fact: he got a feedback for his important report (though the timing was too late to revise)
  • Derived things: he felt the executive accused him and didn’t acknowledge his capability. he assumed she prevented him from promotion

If he focused on the fact. His proper reaction would be

  • First of all, he should say “thank you” for the feedback because it is a input to improve his report
  • Second, he should ask her for providing feedback before deadline of the report to secure the buffer when he revises
  • Third, if he had any points he didn’t catch the meanings, he should confirm them

After that, he should also clarify her intention with acknowledgement that it was just his assumption.

In the situation especially the derived things are negative emotion, you have to be careful to separate it from the fact because the negative emotion becomes a message that the counter person is the person who behave with such vicious intention. Who wants to make good relationship with the person who believe you are vicious.

On the other hand, the more you are in tough situation, the more you easily bond the fact and derived things (often these are negative emotion).

Be careful. Whether she/he is good person for you depends on how you regard and deal with him/her.

Start 4th term in Barcelona /

The 4th term starts from today in Barcelona (though I already did the intensive module in Sao Paulo). I felt that I came back to my place when I reached the campus and met with friends.

All of the classes in 1st year were required, on the other hand, ones in 2nd year are elective. I decided my classes in 4th term following the criteria, Emarging Market, Entrepreneurial Management, and Leadership.

For Emerging Market, I did the intensive module in Sao Paulo. I learned about the context of business environment in LATAM, Finance and Marketing in emerging market, and cross cultural management. I brushed up and honed my past experiences in terms of entrance and growth strategy formulation to emerging market for my client companies.

For Entrepreneurial Management, I opt 2 classes, Working for Start Up and Leading Growth: Strategies and Challenges. The former is, as its name suggests, to work for a certain Start Up company. It is just like a part time internship with a half credit. The latter is to learn about required things for both start up and established companies to grow through case study and consulting project.

For Leadership, I opt the class, Personality and Leadership. I will clarify my values, strengths and weaknesses, and leadership style through counselling by professional etc. I have reviewed my professional and personal life several times (i.e. essay writing for MBA) and will do so in my future; however, I found new things about myself through the 1 year at IESE and therefore would like to organize them to control myself better.

To complement Entrepreneurial Management, I opt 2 classes, Management Control and New Product Development. They don’t focus on Start Up and I will learn how companies continuously implement their strategy and incubate their new growth opportunities. My past experiences are for large enterprises; thus, I would like to hone them to understand the difference between Start Up and established company clearer.

Anyway, I would like to stretch myself as much as possible.

Emerging Market | Entrepreneurial Management | Leadership だ。

Working for Start UpとLeading Growth: Strategies and Challengesだ。

Personality and Leadershipだ。

Management ControlとNew Product Developmentだ。

Back to Barcelona
